The rolling South Downs

The soil, with a depth of about 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) above the stone, is an argillaceous loam, free-draining but with more substance and depth than that of the Upper Chalk, on which most South Downs vineyards are situated, but with a similar high alkalinity.
